Have you ever stopped and considered how much the Internet has impacted the world? One major change that has happened in only a few shorts years is the buying and selling of goods and services online. You can buy nearly anything online! Even 10 years ago this was nearly unheard of. Of course, we still have the choice of shopping in stores and many people only do so. Yet, the number of online sales is only increasing, and often by leaps and bounds.
Here are a few of the areas in which one can easily see the strengths and weaknesses of either form of shopping:
Convenience
Shopping at home provides the convenience of accomplishing everything without having to leave one’s home. Yet, going to a store mean you get service personnel who can help you make the right choice and you don’t have to wait for anything to be shipped to you. Anything that is hard to find locally, is not time sensitive, or you wouldn’t want to be seen buying is great to online. Anything that you need immediately or prefer to try on or touch is much more conveniently purchased from a local store.
Experience
Shopping online can be a unique experience, especially when more effort has been put in the applications, design, or features on a website. Compare this to a local store, whose experience offers customer service, well-crafted displays, dressing rooms, and much more, depending on how upscale the market is. Depending on your personality and the type of store in which you shop, this can be delightful and preferable, or simply annoying. You can’t talk to employees (at least not face to face), touch products, and try things on on a website, but at the same time, you may be avoiding sales-pitchy marketers and long lines.
Variety
The Internet by far has the largest selection of, well, everything. There are billions of websites offering a plethora of goods and services, many of which can’t be bought in a department or general store-antiques, handmade items, and foreign items-which are abundant online. Still, traditional shopping is often not hindered by this, since these things are not staples. For example, a store will have all the variety of milk or scotch tape you will ever need.
Availability
Ever run to the local department store and they happen to be out of the one thing you wanted? Or have you ever gone to several stores just to find your favorite brand? The Internet not only has everything, but it doesn’t run out either. You make the order, and it gets shipped to you from the warehouse, now empty shelves, no more waiting until the next shipment to get to your local store. On the other hand, local stores provide the availability of being a 10 or 20 minutes drive away while most online purchases take several days to arrive to your home.
Additional Expenses
Shopping locally sometimes means that you have a limited supply or limited competition, especially in a small town. Also, if you live far from the closest markets or have to drive to several stores, you could figure in travel expenses. Additionally, most purchases in stores will be taxed, where online purchases often aren’t. However, even with online items usually being less expensive, you must always consider shipping expenses.
Some things are better to be bought online, while others would be impractical or impossible. Local stores may have lost income in some ways, but they will always be needed by all and preferred by some.
